Park dedication set for April 30
By Joe Evans
WAVERLY, NEBRASKA – April 30 will be a special day for the George Lawson family.
It will be a day not forgotten by the family and one that will cement the legacy of the late George Lawson.
The City of Waverly is holding a dedication ceremony at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 30 at George Lawson Park, 141st and Oldfield Streets.
“I think just having a park named after him, he just leads as an example for others to follow.” Waverly Parks and Recreation Director Noah Dea said. “People can learn about who he was and how much he did for the community.”
City officials decided to name the park in Lawson’s honor a few years ago.
George Lawson died in 1993 at the age of 48. His wife, Vicki, still lives in Waverly.
“I know George would be very honored to have a park named after him,” Vicki said. “He always had a smile on his face, and I am sure he is smiling down on us all now.”
Vicki would regularly take photographs of the park as it progressed from dirt work to the new ball field. Other ball fields and soccer fields are also planned for the park.
She said honoring her husband at the dedication ceremony is an honor for her family.
“We’re just so thrilled that they’re honoring George this way for his hard work,” she said.
The City of Waverly has grown quite a bit since 1993; so many people may not know George Lawson and what he did in the community.
The Lawsons moved to Waverly in May of 1971. He started coaching teams in the park and recreation leagues, helped with field maintenance, schedule games, coach YMCA basketball and coached legion baseball.
“He liked it all,” Vicki said. “Basketball, baseball, fishing – he was an outdoorsman.”’
She added that when George first got involved with coaching youth sports in the town that many of the teams didn’t have uniforms. Combined with monetary donations, the Lawsons also rented out movies from their home to raise money for uniforms.
It should be no surprise that children were a priority to the family.
George and Vicki Lawson have two grown sons, Dave and Bryan. Their daughter, Sandy, who was born with Down syndrome, died in 2003. Bryan was born with autism, but played baseball. Dave was also involved with baseball and basketball.
Vicki said helping children was a passion of her husband’s and was probably why he was so involved with the youth.
“I don’t know if it was to help kids get involved who maybe didn’t have the ability to outshine other people or not, but he loved kids,” she said.
Bryan and Dave are planning to be in attendance at the dedication ceremony. Dave is slated to throw out the first pitch of the Waverly High School varsity game that will immediately follow the ceremony.
Other family members from Lincoln to Atlanta, Ga., are also planning on being in attendance on the special day.
“We’d also love to see anyone who was coached by George at the dedication,” Vicki added.
She also said her husband would be very humbled by the honor of having a park named after him.
“He used to sit in a certain chair in the living room and someone would give him praise for something and he’d just look over his glasses like, okay,” Vicki recalled.
While it may be somewhat bittersweet for the Lawson family to celebrate on April 30 without the patriarch, Vicki said happiness would outweigh any sadness.
“It will be somewhat emotional, but George was such a happy, outgoing person that you can’t help but not think of him and be happy,” she said.
A Horse Whisperer
Phenomenal ride This is absolutely awesome... Remember... .No bridle, no saddle... All commands are by touch only. This is one of those, "I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it with my own eyes" kind of thing.
This girl riding the horse is in her 20's - her father passed away just 24 Days before this performance. You can hear her dedication to him just before her performance so turn up your speakers a bit. Notice that it isJust her and the horse - no bit, no saddle. She uses signals and touch cues. Oh yeah, this isn't even her horse. She is training it for someone else, although she obviously has a relationship with this one
